Privacy & statistics
We use limited statistics to understand which wildlife information people find useful. You can exclude your visits.
What the statistics contain
Page views are processed by Matomo on our own hosting. We do not use tracking cookies or send these statistics to an advertising company. The statistics can include the public page visited, time of the visit, browser and device information, and a shortened IP address. We shorten IP addresses before using them in visit reports.
We discard page query strings and fragments apart from public forum topic and board numbers. Referring pages on our sites can retain those public numbers too; login and session parameters are discarded. An external referrer is reduced to its website origin. No assistant question, photo, forum message or account identifier is included. We do not record downloads, outgoing-link clicks or form contents as statistics events.
Cookieless visit counts are estimates, not a count of individually identified people. The hosting server still receives connection information needed to serve pages and protect the service.
Exclude your visits
We honour Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals. You can also save a preference on this site in this browser. It stores only an opt-out setting, not a visitor identifier. Clearing browser storage removes that preference.

The website and community save preferences separately. To exclude public community visits too, use the community's statistics control while signed out. Signed-in community visits, account pages, searches and posting forms are not included in page-view statistics.
Your enquiries
The contact form emails your optional name, reply address and message to hello@ozwildlife.org.au through our hosting server. We use them to read and respond to your enquiry. We do not keep a separate copy of your message in the website. Delivered emails remain in the mailbox until deleted; there is no automatic 90-day deletion of enquiries.
To limit spam, the form uses a short-lived security check and temporary records containing times and keyed hashes, rather than your message, email address or raw IP address. These records expire within a day and are removed when the form is next used. The form does not use a third-party CAPTCHA, advertising service or AI to process your message. Please leave out passwords and sensitive personal information. You can contact us by email instead.
Retention and separate services
Our settings request deletion of detailed statistics older than 90 days and summary reports older than 24 months. Clean-up runs with the analytics application.
The AI assistant has separate processing information under Privacy & limits. Its questions and photos are not statistics events. The community forum has its own accounts, necessary login cookies and privacy notices. Browser preferences are stored separately for each site address.
