- 01
Put safety first
Stay clear of traffic and other hazards. Observe from a safe distance; keep pets and other people away. Don’t approach an animal you cannot identify or handle safely.
- 02
Call and explain where you are
Give the rescuer or vet the animal’s exact location and describe what you can see. Sick or injured wildlife needs prompt veterinary assessment. Call ahead before transport.
- 03
Contain only if safe and advised
If a professional advises you to contain a small animal, use a secure, ventilated container lined with a towel. Keep it somewhere dark and quiet, away from people and pets. Minimise handling and follow their hygiene instructions.
- 04
Wait for professional guidance
Give no food or water unless the vet or rescuer directs you to. Ask about warmth, especially for orphaned young or birds. Follow the professional’s care and transport instructions.
